On May 20th – after 50-days of encirclement, facing starvation, without ammunition – the remaining heroes of the Azov battalion, many seriously wounded, surrendered to the Russian invaders.
Their defence of Azovstal iron and steel works, prevented the capture of the strategic city of Mariupol, for near on 2-months (a longer period than France fought in WWII) and as the Ukrainian general staff commented they did not allow the enemy to transfer groups of up to 17 battalion tactical groups (about 20,000 personnel) to other areas,” and thus prevented the total collapse of their south eastern flank.
Whilst incorporated into the Ukrainian National Guard – the Azov Battalion was a nationalist battalion – showing again – that it is patriotism amongst your people that saves an independent state during war – and not the liberals, who typically dash for the first exit.
We trust that the International Red Cross – will ensure the safe treatment of the battalion that has been transported as prisoners to Russia – and that President Volodymyr Zelensky keeps his promise that “Ukraine needs Ukrainian heroes alive” – and ensures that any cease fire or peace – brings the patriots home safe.
